Employment

The employment category of the Migration program aims to enhance and strengthen the Australian economy.  This is achieved through the granting of  permanent residency to visa applicants who have qualifications and skills in particular occupations that are required in Australia.

This category comprises two streams:-

  • General Skilled Migration – targeting professionals and other skilled migrants under 45 years of age.

Applicants for the majority of General Skilled visas are assessed on a points test which is graded for age, English language ability, occupation and work experience among other factors.  The applicant’s nominated occupation must be listed on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List.
  • Employer Sponsored Migration – aiming to respond to the needs of Australian employers and address skill shortages in the Australian labour market.

Australian employers can nominate, sponsor and employ skilled workers who have recognised qualifications and skills/or experience in required  occupations.

The nomination or sponsorship must be approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship prior to a visa being granted to the employee.
